A Summer Without Sundresses (It's Possible)

When the sun comes out, my productivity goes down. It’s like an inevitable inverse relationship, no matter how hard I try to ignore my dire need to leave the library behind and soak up vitamin C.

An exam the next day equals studying in the park, and studying in the park means paying more attention to the smallest ants on the ground than to my textbook. Laundry to do? Eh, tomorrow.  Errands to run? Unless it includes eating froyo while I bask in the sun, probably not happening.

Unfortunately, the way I dress tends to follow this same trend – especially in the summer. Sleeping in late and relaxing for a couple months easily puts a damper on my fashion forward effort. Running shorts and flip-flops are definitely the most appealing option for lounging-at-home comfort (don’t argue with me on this), but that doesn’t mean I should be leaving the house in a wardrobe that screams laziness.

If you’re feeling anything like me, then I’ve got the ultimate solution. One word: Rompers!

Jumpsuits, onesies, playsuits, whatever you want to call it, this is definitely the style staple that every effortless fashionista can thrive on. It requires no mix and matching or advanced thought, and it’s easily accessorized. Follow these quick looks for painless summer mornings, no matter the occasion.

1) A trip to the museum, library, or curling up with a good book in your favorite café: Dressed Up Overalls

I was a skeptic about overalls last year, but now I see them left and right I’m totally sold on them (and no, it’s not just because I worked at an edgy magazine – although, they did make a frequent appearance there…). They’re perfect for an artsy out-on-the town day trip, and even if the hipster vibe is still too strong for you, try pairing them with a fun crop top underneath or a playful shoe to make them more feminine (the ones above are Kate Spade x Ked).

 2) Sunday Brunch: Classic and Casual Black & White

Brunch is one of those occasions that I’m never quite sure how to dress for. Gossip Girl made me believe that it was a formal occasion filled with Louboutins and expensive pleated skirts. Until I walked into my first breakfast reservation in the city, that is. Waking up on the weekend is already difficult enough, so keep it casual with a simple, but charming, black and white romper. A cute fedora will hide any messy hair from the night before, and a statement bag or clutch will keep the whole ensemble from being too bland.

3) Vacationing at the beach: Sailor Style
Couldn’t you just imagine strolling along the beach in these little nautical numbers with a piña colada in hand? Light and breezy colors (like periwinkle or white) are a definite when it comes to spending time along the coast, and laid back tote and strappy sandals complete the fundamental warm weather outfit. Bonus: the size of the bag leaves room for everything from water bottles to sunscreen without sacrificing your polished look.

So if you're wondering what you should wear to your Memorial Day BBQ this weekend...you know the drill.
